Houston Light Rail

Harsco Industrial IKG (IKG) was selected to provide grating for handrail inserts for the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) Light Rail line, which began operation in January 2004.

The handrail inserts are made of IKG’s powder coated aluminum rectangular bar swage-locked grating, chosen for its architectural appearance, economy and high strength-to-weight ratio – a dependable, proven product to support heavy pedestrian use of the handrails.  The grating was powder coated yellow and light blue to match the METRO colors used on the project: white, gray, green, blue and yellow.  The light blue handrail grating was specially manufactured by IKG with rolled bearing bars for an open architectural appearance.  IKG’s GrateCoat® powder coating can be customized to match your color needs

The 7.5-mile Main Street line runs from south of Reliant Park to the University of Houston-Downtown, with 16 total stops along the way, including the Texas Medical Center and Rice University.  This is the first phase of a projected 73 miles of light rail service in Houston by the year 2025.
